Better sleep leads to better eating

When we start a new week - we often refer it to 'back-on-the-wagon' day...

  • eating more fruit & veggies, and less fat, starch & sugar
  • drinking 'less alcohol'

I was part of, and presented my "BOOST your Resilience" Keynote online, for an Australian Conference last Friday, which was midnight to 5am (in South Africa) for me.

Firstly, well done to Courageous Leadership Hub and Alison Lalieu.
It was an OUTSTANDING Conference. I have already used some of the concepts that I learnt, and I am still pondering other phenomenal “provocative questions”!

Now to the point of this article.

Each night last week I attempted to get to bed by 8pm / then 7pm ...in order to 're-orientate' my body clock, enabling me to get enough sleep on Thursday night: I was aiming for 7pm to midnight.

I managed to get those 5 hours of sleep, but that's still not the 7 hours that we need.

I felt fantastic during the online Conference, but I have also noticed the impact on my eating over this last weekend, and to my distress... today (on Monday) I was still 'hungrier' than normal.

The research in this article is good - read now

A few highlights:

  1. "Last year, a group of researchers analyzed data from 36 studies that included several hundred thousand participants. They found that people who routinely slept less than seven hours per night had a 26 percent higher risk of developing obesity compared with people who got the recommended amount of sleep."
  2. More research: People who "slept just 5½ hours a night over a two-week period - consumed an extra 300 calories a day."
    That's 1255 kilojoules... ouch!
  3. This was the research that I disliked THE MOST:
    "Scientists found that when healthy adults got just four hours of nightly sleep over a two-week period, the participants not only ate more and gained weight, they experienced an 'expansion' in their abdominal fat".

    Is this enough INCENTIVE for you to get that 7 hours of shut-eye, per night, every night?

    Remember ... you can NEVER catch-up on sleep.
    Consistency of 7 hours per night, 7 nights per week does the trick!
