I am a self-confessed Podcast junkie. This morning, on my little trot around the block, I started listening to Dr. Andrew Huberman's 'FOCUS & CONCENTRATION' Podcast for a second time. I almost NEVER listen to anything twice. I certainly never read a book twice or watch a movie for a second time, so this is REALLY yummy stuff!
He uses a metaphor: the “Arrow Model” of Focus: Epinephrine, Acetylcholine & Dopamine, and speaks in a simple, info-taining way.
Here are a few take-aways, that I have implemented, so far…
- An ice cold shower after my hot shower. He advocates about 3 mins. I can only manage 1 min (at this stage).
- Binaural Beats to Improve Concentration (I use the BrainTap App)
- The 90 min Deep focus Ultradian Cycle: Warm-Up, Maintaining Focus & Deliberate Defocusing
- Caffeine for Focused Work, Dopamine Efficacy, Alertness (Hmmm I have always done this - but now ONLY 2 hours after waking. He gives the science behind adenosine build-up for this. It makes a difference. Have a herbal tea and then 2 hours later... your first caffeine kick.
- Short Meditation - I do 11 to 13 mins every morning (also using the BrainTap App)
- Yoga Nidra, Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) & Defocus Periods ( I do this... and often a 20 min power nap midday. I had a wonderful one today!)
- Supplements & Food - he discusses this in depth and I'll share this in another article.
