Grind, Ground, or Grounded?

The year’s closing stretch often feels like a relentless grind. Deadlines, planning, and the holiday rush make us feel like we need a caffeine IV just to keep going.

For many of us, our "grind" is quite literally grounded—coffee grounds, tea leaves, or dreaded energy drinks (hello, sugar-laden fizz). Honestly, I can’t hide my disdain for energy drinks... those neon-blue concoctions? They might as well be labeled "toxic waste" for our bodies.

But here’s the rub: while caffeine can jumpstart your morning, too much, especially late in the day, can turn the "grind" into a sleepless night. According to the Sleep Foundation, up to 400mg of caffeine a day (about four cups of coffee) is considered safe for most adults, but timing is everything. Sip too late, and your circadian rhythm pays the price.

I get it—it’s hard to say no to that 4 PM pick-me-up. But what if we made a couple of small, fun habit changes to help?

Habit #1: The “Non-Negotiable Caffeine Cutoff”
When the big hand hits the 2 and the little hand reaches 12 (yep, 2 PM), caffeine is officially off the table. That means no coffee, no tea, no colas, and certainly no energy drinks. Why 2 PM? It gives your body enough time to process the caffeine and wind down, giving you a better shot at restorative sleep.

Habit #2: Start the Day with Water or Herbal Tea
Before diving into that glorious first cup of java, start your day with a glass of water or herbal tea. Here’s why: it helps delay the buildup of adenosine, a chemical in your brain that makes you feel drowsy as the day goes on. Caffeine blocks adenosine, but if you start too early, you could find yourself in a cycle where you need more and more caffeine just to stay functional.

A Jaw-Dropping Stat
Here’s something astonishing I learned today—an American survey found that over 75% of children older than five consume caffeine. My jaw hit the floor when I read that. As a grandparent to kids this age, the idea of them becoming hooked on caffeine is deeply concerning. Fizzy drinks, energy boosters, even chocolate—all of these contribute to this startling statistic. Let’s do everything we can to protect their developing brains and bodies. Kids have boundless energy naturally; let’s not replace it with artificial and unnecessary boosts.

So, as you tackle the year’s last sprint, remember: respect the cutoff and start your day right. Your body deserves balance—less jitter, more joy. Who knows? You might even find that the grind feels a little smoother when you’re fully recharged.

Let’s redefine the grind this year-end. I’d love to hear from you—share your favorite non-caffeinated pick-me-ups below! ☕✨

P.S. I found this pic on my phone - dated 13 January 2021. Flip, I wish I could remember where I bought this coffee. I could do with staring at these positive words as a sip that java!
