Stuck in an emotional state … fire your glutes!

I presented a mini workshop yesterday, and was asked this question: “Joni, what do you do, in order to get out of a bad mood?
In other words, what do you do when you are stuck in an emotional state?”

My immediate answer : ‘MOTION SHIFTS EMOTION’.
This works for me 100% ... every time.

If I’ve had an (unproductive) argument in a meeting, or even walked out the room (or ‘left the Zoom meeting’) frustrated and irritated... my go to habit is to MOVE.

Here are a few easy ways to get ‘unstuck’, and quickly shift your mood.

If you’re at the office:

  1.  Go to the bathroom and do 50 deep squats … until your glutes are burning like hell.
  2. Find a flight of stairs to run up … until you are puffing and panting!
  3. Find an empty meeting room, and drop to the floor and do a 2min plank (or as long as you can hold the  ‘plank’ position without collapsing. The trick is to set your timer on your mobile. I can only manage 2mins max these days. My brain ONLY focuses on that count down between 1min 40 and 2mins. I think of NOTHING ELSE! This is a GREAT way to stop ‘ruminating’ about that ‘problematic issue’, or whatever ‘triggered’ you!


If you’re at home:

  1. You can obviously do all of the above.
  2. PLUS, add MUSIC! I have a Party Music playlist on my Mobile: and I turn the volume up to max & sing. My family complains… because I am tone-deaf!
  3. I keep a cordless skipping rope on my desk. I am fairly fit, but skipping at my desk for 2mins is a challenge.
  4. I also keep a stretch band at my desk. I put this around my ankles and either ‘crab walk’ across my office, or better still go outside (shoes off) and do this on the grass. 20 steps to the left, and 20 steps to the right with a tight resistance band, and my glutes are firing like crazy!
